Freemuse: 17 inmates of Kocaeli T Type Prison have received disciplinary charge by the warden of three more months in prison for having been “singing and dancing illegally”.
Hatice Şahin and Doğan Şahin Ermiş were expected to be released from prison on 23 and 24 February 2012. But this didn’t happen, and the Istanbul office of the human rights association İHD received a letter from Hatice Şahin saying:
“I have been in prison nearly for seven years. My sentence ended on 23 February, yet I have not been discharged. The warden started an investigation for singing in my native tongue, Kurdish. This is why I am still here. They say I will not be released until the investigation is concluded.”
The Contemporary Legal Association ÇHD İstanbul chair lawyer Taylan Tanay observed this to be a “conditional discharge”. Taylan Tanay explained that convicted are discharged conditionally when they have done three quarters of their sentences.
