Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music composed by Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek
Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek met more than two decades ago when Brian Keane discovered Omar playing in a club in New York, and hired him to play on his score to the Suzanne Bauman documentary about the art of the Ottoman Empire "Suleyman the Magnificent" in 1987. German record company owner Eckart Rahn noticed the music when the program aired and released the soundtrack on his Celestial Harmonies label. Their collaboration would grow to become among the most influential in both Eastern and Western music, pushing the boundaries of musical, spiritual, and geographical traditions. Since their initial work together, Brian Keane has become a Grammy winning record producer of over 100 records, and a multiple Emmy award winning film and television composer of over 400 films, while Omar … [+] Máis...

One truth

One Truth
Turkish classical music, refined in the Ottoman Empire from the 16th through 18th centuries, reflects profound spiritual influences, most notably those of the mystic Sufi Mevlevi or "whirling dervishes." Multi-instrumentalist and singer Omar Faruk Tekbilek forges a compelling eclectic approach to this Islamic devotional tradition. His virtuoso technique and uninhibited approach to composition and sacred musical interpretation blends a sweeping array of Levantine percussion, wind and stringed instruments with bongos, keyboards, toy piano, electric and acoustic six- and twelve-stringed steel and classical guitars, flamenco guitar and palmas, violin and cello. Faruk leads a practiced ensemble whose sinuous exploration of his own and classical Turkish compositions, weaving an extended meditative tapestry of sound whose layered texture defies easy categorization, inviting audiences themselves to surrender their aesthetic preconceptions and listen anew.

Dance into Eternity

This compilation contains Faruk's finest work, including a previously unissued performance from a WNYC-FM radio concert recorded in New York City in 1990 and a track by Faruk's old band, The Sultans, culled from a private release. "Working with Faruk has been one of the most satisfying muiscal experiences of my life," says Keane. Both helped with the music selection on this compilation, which reflects some of the finest flowerings of Faruk's Tree of Patience.

Rare Elements

The Divine on the Dancefloor, the Breath in the Beat: Sufi-Inspired Turkish Master Omar Faruk Tekbilek Remixed for Rare Elements

The divine is everywhere, in the breath of a reed flute, the clank and hum of machines, or the slammin’ beats of an electronic track. This is Turkish virtuoso Omar Faruk Tekbilek’s message, and he hears it everywhere. Now new sides of Tekbilek’s Sufi-inspired songs and compositions jump out on Rare Elements

Omar Faruk Tekbilek (5 Points Records; June 9, 2009), the second installment in the Rare Elements series of musical meetings between global master musicians and the world’s most creative remixers: Junior Sanchez, Tommie Sunshine, Flosstradamus, Amon Tobin, Albert Castillo, Nickodemus and Zeb, Kodomo, Joe Claussell, Cheb i Sabbah, and Jordan Lieb.

Looking at Earth from Space, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe all come together in the Mediterranean, literally meaning "the Middle Earth."The immense liquid entity of the Mediterranean Sea has blended these different cultures for millennia, and Turkey, situated at the Eastern Mediterranean, has long been a geographical and cultural crossroads. So it is fitting that on Alif such a world class musician as Omar Faruk Tekbilek would serve as a transdimensional ship, traveling from port to port, historyto future, style to style, sharing his immense gifts and reminding us that art is a glimpse of the Divine. For perhaps more than any other art, music supercedes social differences by showing the similarities in humanity.Musical notes don't represent nationality, but rather express emotionality.

Best of Sultans

Omar Faruk Tekbilek is one of the foremost Middle Eastern musicians in the world. His musical mastery of assorted instruments includes nay (or ney), zurna, oud, keyboards, several percussions, as well as many others.
In 1976 Faruk and his brother-in-law, Ibrahim Turmen, a very talented darbuka player, formed The Sultans Middle Eastern Band. Other members included Egyptian Sherif Sarakby performing keyboards and accordion, and Greek Nick Mouganis performing bouzuki, guitar, and bass.
In 1985 Faruk's brother Hadji performed on Volume 3 of The Sultans - an ethno-carbaret album. In 1987 Sherif left the group and Amine Khoury with his brother Raymond joined The Sultans.
Over the years The Sultans released five dynamic recordings. "The Best Of The Sultans" captures and enchances their best performances as they were remastered for this CD recording.
